1. End-to-end digitalisation, not just tracking
Logistics digitalisation is moving from isolated portals towards structured data exchange among businesses, carriers, ports and authorities. Since 1 January 2024, IMO Member States have been required to use a Maritime Single Window for the electronic exchange of information related to a ship's arrival, stay and departure.
In air cargo, IATA promotes the e-AWB, removing the need to print and archive the paper air waybill, and Cargo-XML for regulatory and operational data exchange. The value is not limited to “seeing where the cargo is”: it also lies in reducing manual re-entry, errors and clearance time.
2. Resilience and reliability as performance measures
The World Bank's 2023 Logistics Performance Index places reliability at the centre of logistics performance. It reports that, on average, 44 days pass from the time a container enters the exporting port until it leaves the destination port, accounting for roughly 60% of total international trade time.
Resilient planning combines alternative suppliers, inventory windows, prioritisation criteria and early-warning alerts. This is an operational inference from the emphasis official sources place on reliability, digitalisation and delay reduction.
3. Visibility built on consistent data
Useful visibility depends on comparable milestones and accurate master data: reference number, carrier, origin, destination, estimated dates, transhipment events and exceptions. If every participant describes the same event differently, the dashboard may look modern while decisions remain slow.
The trend is to connect booking, document and event data so teams manage exceptions —delays, itinerary changes, missing documents or inspections— instead of chasing status updates by email.
4. Decarbonisation and new information requirements
IMO's 2023 GHG Strategy sets the ambition of reaching net-zero greenhouse-gas emissions from international shipping by or around 2050. It also targets at least a 40% reduction in carbon intensity by 2030 compared with 2008 and aims for zero or near-zero GHG technologies, fuels or energy sources to represent at least 5%, striving for 10%, of the sector's energy use by 2030.
This increases the importance of operational efficiency, route selection, cargo consolidation and credible emissions data. For shippers, the discussion is moving from broad claims towards traceable and comparable information.
5. What a company can do now
- Define milestones and update owners for each transport mode.
- Avoid manually entering the same data in multiple systems.
- Measure reliability as well as average cost and transit time.
- Create protocols for delays, rerouting and missing documentation.
- Request emissions data with a clearly stated methodology and scope.
- Prioritise integrations that improve operational decisions, not only visualisation.
